Lan Yuan, Dunedin Chinese Garden commemorates the contribution of Chinese people to Dunedin’s history and culture.

The Chinese garden was a dream of the Chinese Garden Trust with the support of the Shanghai Government and Dunedin City Council. The design took eight years, and the garden was prefabricated and assembled in Shanghai, then dismantled and transported to Dunedin. Lan Yuan is the only authentic Chinese garden in New Zealand.

The beautiful gardens are so tranquil and quiet; there are lots of sitting areas, and it’s a great place for a quiet break from the outside world. The river at the front entrance hall is the boundary between the inside and outside world.

The rock mountain pathways are amazing. When you reach the mountain summit, there is a half pavilion which symbolizes the Ming philosophy of “keeping the clouds and borrowing the moon.”

The tea house overlooks the lake with a view on all sides. This is a traditional dining room, and guests can enjoy authentic Chinese tea and food. There is also a tea shop.

The sheltered courtyard serves as a communal space to enjoy traditional Chinese refreshments.
