When we left the camp at Nelson Creek (see post) the morning was misty with low cloud and drizzle.
We headed to Moana and lake Brunner stopping at Lake Haupiri on the way. As you can see the weather didn’t really improve and by the time we reached Moana it was worse so we could hardly see lake Brunner. We will have to get photos of that area next time we are in the wonderful part of the South Island.
Gloriavale can be seen across the other side of the Lake – Haupiri. Gloriavale is religious closed community with an estimated population of over 500.
Lake Haupiri – a beautifully still day but no sun
Otira viaduct
Mt White Bridge – turn left from the main road heading east and cross Mt White bridge. This road will take you to two DOC camps, Hawdon Shelter a standard camp site Camp in the lower reaches of the Hawdon Valley on the grassy flats and Andrews Shelter – a basic camp popular with trampers. During winter this alpine area may be covered in snow, making access difficult.
Lunch time at Mt White bridge. As soon as we crossed over the pass the day changed to a beautiful warm clear day.
Lunch over, vehicle check and ready to head up the valley to find lake Latitia.
Beautiful country and reasonable gravel road – heading up the valley – looking for Lake Laticia along side the Waimakariri river
The end of the road, we didn’t find Lake Laticia, apparently its on private land so we will do some homework next time and try and get permission next time.
Short cut to Lake Coleridge – Lydon Road this was a good gravel road and only 20km to Lake Coleridge.
