This post is a bit different, rather than off the main road NZ, it’s on mainly main roads, Queensland Australia. I say on the main roads as the rental car company gave us a map and told us not to go off the grey shaded area – we were told that “there’s nothing but sand and kangaroos out there anyway” really?? No driving on sand or in water – bugger!!! The last rental car we had in Australia we were charged extra for steam cleaning the mud off under the car, so we did take it a bit easier this time.
We picked up our little green (reasonably comfortably and unbelievably economical) rental car at Brisbane airport and hit the road for what would be a 4000 km trip.
First stop was Hervey Bay (see post) where we had a great look around the area and a wonderful trip to Fraser Island (see post), although we were gutted that we didn’t see a Dingo. We then headed to Airlie Beach (see post) with more exploring and a trip to the Whitsunday Islands, Daydream Island, Hamilton Island and the beautiful Whitehaven beach.
Off again for six nights in Cairns, as usual we were busy every day – we don’t do sitting around the pool and relaxing holidays – our holidays are full on!!! Cairns is very diverse with the tablelands, mountains, beaches and rainforest. We were fascinated with the crocodiles but more about that in another post.
We had a great time, saw lots of stuff and went to some amazing places, it was nice to have two weeks of warm weather in the middle of our winter and as usual just great to get away.
Here is a very quick look at our trip. I’m now sorting through (many) photos for more detailed posts on each area – watch this space 🙂
