Tiger Moth Flight over Wanaka

A few years ago, Graham surprised me with a unique and unforgettable birthday present – a voucher for a breathtaking flight in a Tiger Moth with Classic Flights in the picturesque town of Wanaka. We waited for a fine weekend and found a nice spot to park the caravan for the weekend about halfway between Cromwell and Wanaka, beside Lake Dunstan.

When we arrived at Classic Flights, the pilot gave me a leather flying jacket and a leather flying helmet – I thought they were just to look the part, but actually, it turned out to be quite cool once we were in the air, so I was pleased to have them. The plane has an open cockpit with exposed wires and levers, so you can see everything that is happening.

We flew over Wanaka township and the lake, then back over Albert Town and up the Clutha River back to the airport. It was great to experience the excitement of the early flyers and their flying machines, the smell of oil and aviation fuel, the exhilaration of the open cockpit, and the wind in your face.

The scenery was amazing. This is one of the most spectacular scenic locations in New Zealand.

Seeing this stunning area from the air, on such a beautiful day was amazing!

The once small holiday town has certainly expanded

Looking past Glendu Bay to the Metukituki Valley, Mount Aspiring National Park – beautiful countryside but that’s another post.
