The Moeraki Boulders are round rocks found on Koekohe Beach, located between Moeraki and Hampden on New Zealand’s South Island east coast. These fascinating geological formations, which are made of calcite, were formed approximately 65 million years ago during the time of the dinosaurs. Each boulder weighs several tons and can stand impressively up to two meters tall. Visitors to the area can walk along the scenic beach to explore these natural wonders up close, marveling at their unique shapes and textures. Afterward, a beautiful nature walk leads back to the cafe and shop, where guests can relax and enjoy local delicacies. For an optimal experience, aim to visit during low tide when the boulders are most visible, giving you the perfect opportunity to capture stunning photographs and appreciate the serene coastal environment.
